In 2008, Schneider wrote a play called "Sounds of Silence: A Documentary Puppet Musical Farce" about the 2004 United States election voting controversies in Ohio. Her ensuing solo show, Words of the Prophets, is composed partially of quotes from "homeless people all over the world." She begins collecting sounds and winds up falling in love with her country." The show won the 2003 New York International Fringe Festival award for "Best Solo Show". I wanted to repeat the peoples' words verbatim so the audience could develop their own perspective." Using a semi-autobiographical approach, Schneider links the quotes and stories together, saying "it’s really a love story about a petulant girl who starts out hating America for perpetuating hate. When interviewed about the shows by Western Washington University newspaper The Western Front, she explained that "People in America today are scared to speak up and tell their perspective on what our nation is or where it is going. The various quotes are combined into a story. During her research into accents, she "visited all the English-speaking countries in the world, conducting more than 7,000 interviews over all." From the interviews she created a one-woman show called Freedom of Speech in which she tells the stories of 34 people in their voices. Dialect research and stage shows įor her college senior thesis, Schneider made a cross-country road tour in a former ambulance studying regional dialects. After the show got canceled, she replaced Alanna Ubach for the second and third seasons of Beakman's World. For the show she was allowed to cast the actors who played her parents. While in college she continued going to auditions and got the role of Sheila Brentwood in the television series The Amazing Live Sea Monkeys. She participated in a theater program at Northwestern University's National High School Institute and graduated from UCLA as a world arts and cultures major. By the time she was in the fourth grade she began writing and performing her own plays, because the teacher told her that she would only be allowed to stage a play if she "wrote, produced, directed." Four years later she was chosen for a part in Annie Schneider's parents would not let her tour with the troupe after being cast. When she was sixteen, she was in her first musical group, IT'S MY PARTY! From ages 7–20, she went to Jewish summer camp, becoming a counselor, and started performing on stage. She started playing violin, learning the Suzuki method, after seeing El Shenkar. Her mother was an attorney for the reservation. Her father was a math and drama teacher at the School of Arts High School in Rochester, New York, where she graduated as salutatorian. Schneider spent her formative years on a Chippewa reservation in Bemidji, Minnesota with her two older brothers in a mostly Jewish family. She also performs various musical and stage shows. She has appeared on television and as a voice over actress on video games and animations. And when the game throws on the spectacle, as it does in the big boss battles, it's genuinely epic stuff. Sure, it sticks to bright colours and simple textures and lets the lighting and material effects do the heavy lifting, but we'd defy you to look at some of the galaxies on offer here and say that they don't look stunning. SMG2 makes you realise how wrong that assumption is. The more we get used to shoddily-built Wii games with simplistic cartoon graphics or ported PS2 models and textures, the more we start thinking that Nintendo's machine can't produce exciting visuals. If the gameplay is peerless for the genre, then SMG2 takes over from SMG1 as the most impressive demonstration yet of what the Wii can do when pushed. Each time you return, you’ll find something new you didn’t find before. You will occasionally find yourself forced to return to an old galaxy to gather an additional star, but when that happens there's still a sense of discovery. This is also a big game, packed with hidden challenges and secret planets. If you’re wondering, no, this new app does not ~yet~ include any additional notification integration, and it’s not clear whether or not it’s on Tapbots future roadmap for the app, or where. Here’s to Chaim for exposing me to a perspective I never would have otherwise considered: Tweetbot’s lack of push notifications as a positive. There are no ads or promoted tweets, powerful mute filters to block out unwanted noise, and (thanks to Twitter’s unfriendly API changes) no notifications to constantly ping you to come back to the app. Tweetbot shows you the tweets of the people you follow, in the order that they tweeted them. Twitter is a vaguely terrible way to spend your time these days, but if you (like me) can’t tear yourself away from the social media service / entryway into hell, you’ll want Tweetbot, which actually makes using Twitter far less painful. If my long term memory had been functioning, I would have remembered noticing its spot in “ 12 great apps for your new iPhone in 2020:” In fact, The Verge, at least, has never given up on Tweetbot. Dedicated coverage of a fucking third-party Twitter client iteration? At this point in history? What in fuck? I’m fairly certainly neither of us are, though: fucking Tweetbot made headlines on Engadget, TechCrunch, 9to5Mac, MacStories, iMore, MacRumors, and others. Perhaps you’re looking at the search results, yourself, and wondering if you’re dreaming. (Yes, I am ashamed about it.) You’re still reading, but perhaps – as I was, originally – you are doing so from an appropriately-jaded, well-read perspective on software, generally, in 2021. Had I investigated any further that first time, I would have discovered an odd amount of buzz coming from even the most mainstream of tech media in a simple search. I’ve paused everything else to write you on this, though, because the story is actually much bigger. In the disappointment I’d already expected, I closed and immediately deleted the app. I didn’t bother to find out about this, though, because my first assumptions upon poking around the new app – especially after encountering its new subscription requirement in order to use any of its substantive features – was that its developers had ceased any actual time investment into the app long ago, and that 6 was a new version in number and rudimentary visual updates, only, shoved out in hopes of peaking old, loyal users like myself enough to get us to download it, at least. As my old fav, The Verge noted in their coverage of 6, blame for these omissions rests solely on Twitter, Inc., itself, who’s continued to hold its API development inordinately close-to-chest. Perhaps it’s because the app didn’t appear to have any new features – in fact, it’s technically got less than 5, though those that have been removed – user-specified URL shortening, image hosting, and video hosting services – haven’t worked in a good while anyway. I can’t remember exactly why – though I suspect I was just fucking around on my phone before bed, bleary-eyed – but the implications of this next numeral passed me by the first time I saw and downloaded Tweetbot 6, two weeks ago. Notably, Tweetbot developer company Tapbots was apparently required to take down Tweetbot 5’s store listing 30 days before releasing Tweetbot 6. This is an unusual practice – usually, pre-release versions of iOS apps can only be distributed through Apple’s developer beta testing infrastructure, though Testflight. At this moment, it is listed on the App Store as an “Early Release” version, though its predecessor can still be downloaded by those who’ve already purchased it in the past, like me. In the name of progress, I’ve done my best to make a point of looking back, too, yet something astonishingly personally relevant managed to slip past me until just last week: there is a sixth version of the Tweetbot app. 825 days ago, I told you lots about the history surrounding the development of Tweetbot 5, which I confidently described as “likely the last competitive third-party Twitter app for iOS.” After spending the past few months diving deep into iOS in preparation to review and reflect upon Apple’s current flagship handset, my eyes have been opened to the exponentially-increasing pace of the whole environment’s metamorphosis during the course of my lapsed attention. Were it just I who came to you with only my voice on this cold night, proclaiming the imminent release of a whole numerical version of a third-party mobile Twitter client in 2021, you really would have no choice but to send for the laws, for you’d be left no consideration other than my comprehensive descent into absolute insanity. Listen to this article read by Siri below. In the bleak face of Twitter’s centralization, Tapbots refuses to give up on its mobile client. This documentation details how to set Firefox up so that a bookmark can specify the container it should open in, using a small third party addon to provide a custom protocol handler. There's been a feature request open against Firefox for quite some time to enable this, but there's been no real movement to date. However, there's a pretty key (IMO) bit of functionality missing: there's no native way to set a bookmark to always open in a specific container. If you're supporting widely distributed kit that you reach through different proxies (SSH tunnels for example), rather than messing around switching Firefox's settings around (though I used to use FoxyProxy), you can simply configure the relevant domain to open in a preconfigured container. Individual containers can also be configured to use different proxy settings. It's not just privacy benefits you gain though, particularly if you're in IT. The functionality allows you to (quite trivially) set a domain to always open within a specific container - so you could (for example) set Facebook to always switch to a container, making it harder for them to track you when you visit other sites (because you'll not be logged into FB in the referring container). This allows you to launch tabs inside a container (whether dedicated to that tab, or shared with some others) so that cookies, locally stored objects etc are only available within the container.Įssentially, it allows you to isolate sites/domains into their own little playground, away from anything else you might want to visit. For quite some time now, Firefox has had a function called Multi Account Containers built into it. I needed to replace the old Mac app "Masterwriter" after it went to an expensive subscription model, and tried everything I could find. The exception to this is if you have a large space or high ceilings. You want to achieve a gentle mixing of the air, not a draft. When running your fan in Winter, it is better to have it on a lower setting than you would use in Summer. You don’t want to cool the air down in Winter, rather you want to draw the air up. So if you don’t feel a cool breeze coming off your fan, then you are in Winter mode. The air won’t be cooling as it is in Summer mode. If your fan is in Winter mode, it should be spinning clockwise. What Direction Should a Fan Spin in Winter? When air is no longer stagnate in a room, meaning there is less condensation and humidity in your room. Modern ceiling fans will have a Winter mode, that allows your fan to redistribute warm air around the room and your home in general. It also reduces the cost of heating fuel, electricity, or gas. Using your fan in Winter mode, combined with heating can actually can save you up to 15% on your heating costs. Here’s the heatmap showing how the fan circulates hot air near the ceiling more evenly.” “So the heater and fan’s total power consumption is less than half used by the heater alone, which can make quite a difference to your bill over time. And as Choice author Jason Treuen points out, This actually warms the room up more than just heating alone. Putting your fan in Winter mode allows the fan to draw air up into the centre of the room, then redistributing it down the walls to the floor, mixing the air in a room. As a result, the warm air rises and you don’t feel all the benefits of your heating system. But this creates limited circulation through the home. In Winter we close up our homes to heat them and retain the heat. Fans are far cheaper to run than hungry heaters (by a lot) and reverse mode means your heater has to do far less work to maintain a constant temperature.” “Running a heater and a fan might sound doubly expensive, but the opposite is actually true. Reasons to Use Your Ceiling Fan in Winter ModeĬhoice’s recent article on “ How ceiling fans can slash your heating costs” discusses how using a heater and ceiling fan together can help save you money, The Summer/Winter mode can be found as a switch on the side of the fan or on the remote control. If you are not feeling cool air, then it is possible your fan is spinning the wrong way, in Winter mode. Blade design also contributes to the downward movement of cool air. Most ceiling fan Summer modes spin counter-clockwise to direct cool air to the ground. What Direction Should a Fan Spin in Summer? Further, an outdoor fan can help you feeler cooler, allowing you to spend more time outdoors or entertaining. This allows you to feel cooler without affecting room temperature. In Summer, a ceiling fan pushes cool air down, evaporation perspiration and creating the wind chill effect mentioned above. Further, fans create a wind chill effect on your skin, making a room feel up to 8 degrees cooler. This is due to the fact that circulating the cool air with a fan means you can reduce the use of air conditioners. Reasons to Use Your Ceiling Fan in Summer Modeīy using your ceiling fan in Summer, you can save up to 40% on air conditioning costs. Many modern fans, like those from Martec, have a Summer/Winter mode that can help you cool your house in Summer while keeping it toasty warm in Winter. While we are used to utilising our fans in Summer, few of us realise that our fans can be used in Winter, as well. Therefore, the tool is able to run multimedia-rich files with smooth compression. This will almost force your lead arm to relax and fold on your forward swing, helping to deliver a square face at impact. One of my favorite drills to combat this is just to take practice swings with your hands split apart. If the lead arm stays too stiff for too long on your forward swing, this will not only hold the club face open and making the ball slice, but also delays the release of the club face and the speed associated. Having width can add power, but if width is misunderstood to mean lead arm stays straight, this can make it really difficult to allow the lead elbow to relax and fold on the forward swing. Width and tension in a golf swing can easily be confused. If you allow this natural curving to happen as your under arms stay closer to your body throughout your are much more likely to have a square club face that also engages the body in the swing, additionally adding power. What can help you to do this properly is to understand the the golf swing is circular in nature. If on your backswing or your downswing your underarms move away from your body, it is very easy to open the face. One of the great stabilizers of a square club face is to keep your underarms relatively close to your body throughout your golf swing. Your lead hand in particular should appear exactly as it looks when this arm hangs and in most cases that would have the thumb off center and opposing the hand for relaxed support and control. One of the more common misconceptions when it comes to a “weak” grip causing an open club face is golfers thinking their thumbs should go straight down the grip. When making this adjustment, often times it needs to be adjusted more than you think. In other words, if you were a right handed golfer, you would rotate your hands to the right. You can make this adjustment by turning one of both of your hands away from your target. The most common cause of an open club face is an incorrect grip as your hand position will directly reflect in the face. This open club face will give you contact that isn’t square and often feels like a “side swipe.” The most common cause of a slice is an open club face. |
